Tanglewood Art Studios presents Postcards from Macon & Beyond, photography by Stephen Cook. Every photograph is more than a postcard—it’s a moment of connection. Below, Stephen shares the story behind this image, inviting you to look a little deeper.
Strolling through a meadow of cholla cacti where the Mojave and Colorado deserts meet, a unique shape caught my eye. In the midst of spiny thorns, a skeletal lattice of softer shapes emerged. Pointed toward the hot desert sun stood the evidence of the difficult pursuit of survival.
This struggle to survive within a land of sparse resources made me long for Macon, a contrastingly lush biosphere. One place dares life to succeed, while the other seemingly encourages it.
I’m reminded that growth isn’t always pretty like the cherry blossoms back home – sometimes it’s just persistence.
From California, with grit.
